Mayor of Sandown

Cllr Alex Lightfoot, Current Mayor and Deputy Mayor

Mayor Alex Lightfoot, elected in May 2024, is assisted by deputy mayor Ian Fletcher.

First item at the yearly council meeting is electing the Mayor from the council’s number.

A mayor’s legal obligations include:

At council meetings, they must ensure the meeting addresses the agenda, maintain order, and follow standing orders (with the help of the clerk).

In reality, this entails opening/closing the meeting, introducing things, arranging debate, making order-related choices, managing attendees’ behavior, and reporting vote results. Possible meeting adjournment by the chairman.

The Mayor has a casting vote in a tie and must sign the meeting minutes as a true record. If two councillors seek an exceptional meeting, the chairman should call it.

The chairman represents the council and performs civic obligations. As chairman, a person must express the council’s opinions, not their own, and make it apparent when they do.
