Arson Attempt Closes Accessible Toilets

Sandown Town Council have had to close the Accessible Toilets at St John’s Toilets and Eastern Gardens, following a series of Arson Attempts and Criminal Damage, and commissioned urgent repairs in order to re-open as soon as possible.

The Town Council recently installed CCTV at both locations and have forwarded footage of individuals, believed to be responsible, to the Police and will support any action to be taken.

Town Mayor Alex Lightfoot said ‘It is sad that willful criminal damage and fires has resulted in the closure of the Town’s accessible toilets, impacting on disabled users and incurring significant cost to the Town Council and local council taxpayers.’

The Town Council invested in new public toilets, and a Changing Places amenity, to improve and enhance amenities for disabled people.

Cllr Lightfoot added ‘We are working with the Police to identify those responsible, setting fire to property is a serious and potentially life-threatening thing to do, and the Town Council will do all it can to hold those responsible to account for what has happened.’
